  1. CARNIFEX MARDI GRAS 2 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in, "CARNIFEX MARDI GRAS," by John F. Carr, published by Pequod Press in 1982.

A work of art can be evaluated and appreciated on two levels; unique conception, and extraordinary craftsmanship.

Of the two elements, perhaps the most important one is the "unique concept," the inspired idea that comes from an artist's unique imagination. Technique, style and artistic virtuosity are important, they are the tools by which the new concept is made real for us to see. It is the unique concept however, that drives us to bigger and better things.

In Science Fiction the "new concept" in a story is the whole point of it's existence, it advances us both intellectually and in spirit, making us better. The wonderful craftsmanship of some artists can stand alone and be appreciated regardless of concept, but there is no doubt in my mind that I was attracted to the SF field because of both; the new concepts I read about and the unusual artwork that was so inspiring. They brought a great deal of pleasure to my life.
